Circular Materials

Sustainability Characteristic Definition

Circular materials support the principles of a circular economy through responsible capture and reuse.

Circular materials are produced from the recovery and reprocessing of wastes or residues. This can apply to the reuse of wastes and processing residues and can include pre-consumer and post-consumer waste. To determine if a product qualifies as a waste or residue, we use the ISCC PLUS flow chart “Process to determine if a material is a waste or a residue” found on page 18, figure 1 of the ISCC PLUS version 3.4.2 standards.

Evidence of circularity should include the waste material source and the circular content by mass (dry mass or mass without added water). Circular materials can include physically segregated material (100% circular), or they can be partially circular, with circular content calculated by controlled blending or mass balance. If circular content is estimated in a range (i.e. 20-40%), the minimum content should be given.

Examples of circular materials include but are not limited to:

  • Recycled plastics or petrochemicals (chemically or physically recycled)

  • Recycled or reclaimed metals

  • Biodiesel from waste oils

  • Products from food processing waste

  • Products from crop residues (i.e. furfural)

  • Reprocessed loop-solvents and industrial processing materials

  • Upcycled products (i.e. d-limonene from orange peels)

  • Sodium bicarbonate produced from carbon capture

  • Tall oil as a residue of the kraft process of wood pulp manufacture

Acceptable documentation includes, but is not limited to:

  • A statement from the supplier to confirm properties of material stating its recycled, reused, recovered, or reprocessed nature and specifying the circular content by mass (kg circular/kg product)

  • A document showing that a material is an ISCC PLUS Circular Material or Bio-circular Material. If the product is not 100% Circular/Bio-circular, then the percentage must be stated

  • A product label showing a product is Upcycled Certified and specifying one of the following thresholds: Upcycled Ingredient, Product Containing Upcycled Ingredients, or Minimal Content

  • A SCS Global Recycle Content Certificate specifying the recycled content of the product

  • A RecyClass certification specifying the recycled content of the product

  • Document indicating EuCertPlast certification with recycled output specified

  • Process flow diagram showing process and material flows that explicitly tracks circular versus non-circular material flows

Sustainable & Natural Product Portfolio

A framework for sustainability at the product level

Because there is no global definition of sustainability at the product level, we developed a Sustainable & Natural Product Framework to help customers evaluate sustainability for ingredients and raw materials. The Framework is already enabling productive communication on product sustainability and we are just beginning. As innovation and regulations emerge,  our Framework will evolve. Visit here often as we add new Sustainable & Natural Product Skus every week!

Here are the first six sustainable & natural product characteristics. Click on each one for definitions and examples.

Sustainability adds value and makes business sense.

By leveraging our strong portfolio of sustainable products, services, practices and technologies to aid customers and consumers in meeting their sustainability goals, we demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and vision for a better world.

Sustainability makes good business sense and aligns with our core values of being serious about safety, a place where people matter, a company that's valuable to others and does what they say so that together, we win. Combined, these sustainability principles illustrate how through common goals, we can work toward a better tomorrow through next-generation solutions.
