As consumers search for the best ways to protect their skin from the sun’s damaging rays, Univar Solutions offers a broad spectrum of UV filters and provides solutions to boost UV performance, wash-off resistance, improved spreadability, and longer wear with a pleasant feel.
Today there are 3 types of sun protection formulations on the market (Organic, Inorganic and Hybrids).
While the INORGANICS act as a barrier, mainly reflecting and dispersing the radiation, and when we think about sensorial the barrier sensation is extended, thus existing a challenge of the filter suppliers in these molecules to improve the sensorial and reduce the white effect on the skin.
Main example: Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide
The ORGANICs act reacting with the UV rays absorbing part of the radiation, and among the various types of molecules on the market, each one has a distinct behavior of reaction and absorption, some of them being treated in recent years as a certain environmental concern of coral bleaching (some examples are Oxybenzone and Octinoxate already banned in Hawaii, besides the octocrylene and avobenzone in process of law), but with the sensory characteristic more enhanced.
Main examples: oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene and avobenzone
HYBRID formulas, represent a phenomenal market potential, to combine the best of both worlds (Inorganic and Organic), bringing together all the sensory benefits and different reaction mechanisms of organic filters, with the high protection without harming the environment of inorganic filters. Enabling formulas with a high variety of textures (cream, water-based, fresh, stick, powder, spray, among others) that are pleasant to the touch.
