Orange Oil is produced from cells within the rind of the orange fruit Citrus sinensis, which are in fact the oranges we are all accustomed to eating. Once considered to be the “Fruits Of The Gods”, oranges are even pictured in the story of Hercules and Titan Atlas as the ‘golden apples’.

The mandarin tree is part of the evergreen family and is a small tree that grows up to 4 meters in height, with a single trunk and many drooping branches. Its origin lies in the Far East where it was extensively grown to be used in folk medicine traditions.

In the eighteenth century through trade, mandarin was brought into Europe where it became commercially cultivated, before being introduced to the Americas, Africa and Australia.

The fruit owes its name to the Ancient Chinese Empire, due to its vibrant colour being reminiscent of Emperor's regal orange robes. Today, the fruit still plays a part in Chinese culture. During the Chinese New Year, mandarins are given as a gift as they represent a traditional symbol of fortune and prosperity.

Thanks to its characteristic zesty and slightly acidic smell, lime oil can be easily used to brighten up any formulation or fragrance blend.

The true origin of lime is not actually certain. Many botanists believe that the citrus fruit began its life in the jungles of Myanmar (previously known as Burma) and India and was first introduced to Europe by early Arab traders.

Originally, British sailors used lemon to prevent scurvy during the 19th century but later switched to lime. The use of citrus fruits was initially a closely guarded military secret, as scurvy was a common scourge to the Navy of many different nations, and the ability to remain at sea for lengthy periods without contracting the disorder was of huge benefit for any military. British sailors thus acquired the nickname "Limey" because of their use of limes.

Lemon trees were originally native to Asia and were used by the ancient Indians, Egyptians and Romans. Lemon trees are thought to have been brought to Europe during the Middle Ages approximately around 200 A.D. and then eventually made their way from the Middle East to North Africa; and later, Christopher Columbus would introduce them to America.

Today, Lemon Oil has earned itself the nickname “Liquid Sunshine” due to its refreshing scent, bright yellow colour, and burst of energy it is known to provide.

HOW THE OIL IS PRODUCED

Lemon Oil is extracted from fresh lemon fruit peels by cold expression. Nearly 1,000 lemons are needed to produce 1 lb. (around 454g) of Lemon Oil. Once extracted, Lemon Oil has a thin, watery viscosity, a pale, greenish-yellow color and gives off a sharp yet fresh fragrance.

The bergamot citrus fruit is currently grown in many parts of the world but is native to Southern Italy, where it achieved prominence also its name from the town of Bergamo where it has become a symbol that represents the whole town.

For centuries, Bergamot Oil has been one of the most prized citrus oils and has been widely used in both perfumery and the culinary arts.

The citrus fruit (Citrus bergamia) grows on bergamot orange trees. While the fruit itself is not edible, the dried peel is often used as a flavouring for confectionary including Turkish Delight, and cakes, and if you love a cup of Earl Grey tea, you may not have realised it but you’re already enjoying the distinctive taste that bergamot offers, as it is used to flavour it.

Grapefruit is a citrus hybrid, which originated in Barbados as an accidental cross between the sweet orange and the pomelo or shaddock. Both these species were introduced from Asia in the 17th century. Grapefruit as we know wasn’t recognized as a distinct species until the early 1800s.

Grapefruit grows on trees, which tend to thrive in more tropical climates, as they prefer sandy soil. The trees themselves are known to grow up to 20 feet tall and have dark green leaves. Surprisingly, the fruit doesn’t resemble a grape at all. It has a yellow rind with pulp that may be yellow, light pink, or a dark deep red.

Steam distilled from the leaves and twigs, Eucalyptus citriodora is used in the perfume industry to manufacture other aroma chemicals, due to its rich citronellal content. The minor components include citronellol, limonene and linalool. Lemon Scented Eucalyptus also acts as a wonderful insect repellent, rivalling DEET in some products (DEET is an active ingredient considered as a reference when it comes to mosquito repellence).

Psychologically, Lemon Scented Eucalyptus Oil can be very soothing and calming. It is often used as a fragrance component (instead of Eucalyptus globulus) in perfumes, detergents and soaps. This light oil shows a pleasant citrus aromatic profile, with sweet citrus top notes which diffuse along with green undertones.

The Cymbopogon plant family welcomes both Citronella and Lemongrass, two cousins usually mistaken because of their similar appearance. The fragrant grass Citronella got its name from the French word meaning “lemon balm,” due to its floral, citrus-like aroma. Its essential oil, extracted from the steam distillation of its fresh leaves, contains high levels of Citronellol and Geraniol. It has been used in China and Indonesia for centuries and traditionally as a flavoring agent in culinary applications.

Today, Citronella Oil is probably best known as a natural insect repellent, but its uses and benefits extend beyond keeping bugs at bay. Its characteristic and happy smell, close to palmarosa and its relatives lemongrass, blends well with all citrus essential oils. Known for its purifying and uplifting effects, it imparts sharp, fresh and lemon-like notes, with woody and musky nuances.

Originating from tropical countries and most likely native to India, Lemongrass has deep historical roots in Asian and African cultures. It has been cultivated in Southeast Asia for the past two thousand years and used in cooking and herbal medicine for centuries. History shows that in East India and Sri Lanka, it was combined with other herbs to make a drink locally known as fever tea. Nowadays, Lemongrass is used in plenty of culinary applications as a flavouring agent, from food to beverages, from desserts to teas. It is especially widely used in Chinese and Thai recipes.

The leaves of the grass release a strong smell of lemon when rubbed or crushed. Their aerial parts are harvested and steam-distilled to produce an oil that is today one of the world’s most popular essential oils. As its name suggests, lemongrass smells just like lemons, but it is milder, sweeter, and far less sour. It exhibits herbaceous, fresh, citral-like notes with woody and floral facets.

Litsea Cubeba is an evergreen shrub native to Southern Asia that can grow approximately 10 meters high in mountainous regions. Despite its lemon-scented leaves and flowers, the tree doesn’t belong to the citrus fruits family but to the Lauraceae family and is in fact related to laurel, sweet bay and cinnamon. Little known in the West, Litsea Cubeba is very popular in Asia. Its small berries resemble peppers, hence the name “Mountain pepper”.

Steam distilled from the fruits, Litsea Cubeba Oil is sometimes known as May Chang Oil. It has been used in ancient Chinese medicine for centuries, but today we know that the oil hosts a whole multitude of benefits in skincare and aromatherapy applications. Native to Australia and New Zealand, Leptospermum petersonii is a fast-growing, drought-resistant, evergreen shrub suitable for both coastal and inland gardens. The oil, formerly known as Citratum, is distilled from the aromatic leaves offering an intensely lemon scented aroma. It works wonderfully well in a variety of products given its antimicrobial properties and delightful scent. The major chemical constituents are comprised of citrals, their typical range include geranial (20-30%), neral (20-35%), citronellal (10-35%), and citronellol.
