Peppermint is a naturally forming hybrid species of two different types of mint, specifically water mint and spearmint. It is thought to have originated in Northern Africa and the Mediterranean. Its species name piperita comes from the Latin piper, meaning pepper, alluding to its aromatic and pungent taste. Peppermint was so highly valued in Ancient Egypt that it was used as a form of currency. It was eventually introduced to Europe where it also became a popular culinary and medicinal herb. Mentha piperita, easily propagated, represents one of the largest and most important perennial herbs and one of the most important commercial aromatic herbs. Peppermint Oil is steam distilled from the fresh or partially dried leaves and flowers of the plant. The oil contains different isomers of menthol as well as menthone and isomenthone. Light yellow to almost colourless liquid, it exhibits a strong, fresh, balsamic and sweet odour.
