Caustic soda is a highly abrasive, colourless alkali which is an essential ingredient in many industrial and commercial applications. It is manufactured through the electrolysis of sodium chloride. Membrane grade caustic soda contains less than 100 ppm of the sodium chloride. This 47% solution decomposes proteins at ambient temperatures and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air making it useful in light petroleum fractions. Caustic soda is also used in the de-inking process of natural fibres and as a makeup chemical in some kraft mills as well as in the production of pulp and paper.
