Clear your mind!
Mints are native to areas all over the world and many have been brought into cultivation.
Unearthing the history of mint reveals that our desire for fresh breath is part of a centuries-old preoccupation with cleanliness as a sign of health. From the ancient stories embedded in mythology to the introduction of mint being grown in medieval gardens throughout Europe in the 1400's, these ancient herbs are strongly aromatic. Known to have a fresh, sharp, cool, and crisp scent and flavor, mint is often associated with confectionary like chewing gum, drinks and beverages including infusions and cocktails such as mojitos, as well as pharmaceutical and oral preparations.
Today, mint has a lot of varieties and subspecies. Discover some of them below.
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint is a naturally forming hybrid species of two different types of mint, specifically water mint and spearmint. It is thought to have originated in Northern Africa and the Mediterranean. Its species name piperita comes from the Latin piper, meaning pepper, alluding to its aromatic and pungent taste. Peppermint was so highly valued in Ancient Egypt that it was used as a form of currency. It was eventually introduced to Europe where it also became a popular culinary and medicinal herb. Mentha piperita, easily propagated, represents one of the largest and most important perennial herbs and one of the most important commercial aromatic herbs.
Peppermint Oil is steam distilled from the fresh or partially dried leaves and flowers of the plant. The oil contains different isomers of menthol as well as menthone and isomenthone. Light yellow to almost colourless liquid, it exhibits a strong, fresh, balsamic and sweet odour. Flavouring beverages and toothpaste, it is also used in fragrances and cosmetic products for topical applications.

Spearmint Oil
Believed to be the oldest of the mints, spearmint has been used and cultivated for so much of human history that there is probably no version of it that is truly wild. The herb is originally from Europe and the Middle East but can also be found all over the world because of the ease in which it grows.
Spearmint’s name is taken from the fact that the plant has pointed, spear-shaped leaves and is also known to be called Garden Spearmint, Green Mint, and various other names. It is commonly known to be the breath-freshening flavouring agent used in oral hygiene products and confectionary including chewing gum. It leaves a cool, tingling sensation that leaves the mouth feeling clean.
Spearmint Oil is obtained from the steam distillation of the bright green spearmint leaves and dried tops. As it contains much less menthol than other mint oils, Spearmint Oil demonstrates a mellower and sweeter flavour, which is fresh and herbaceous. The leaves are traditionally infused with green tea and sugar to prepare Moroccan mint tea, or Maghrebi mint tea, which gives the tea its beautiful fresh odour.

Cornmint Oil (Organic)
Also referred to as "Mentha Arvensis Oil” or "Wild Mint Oil", Cornmint Oil is steam-distilled from the dried leaves of the Mentha Arvensis plant which is a rather fragile herb in the mint family.
The essential oil is a pale yellow-green colour with a breathtakingly refreshing and uplifting odour due to it having a higher menthol content than that of other mints such as peppermint. The first thing to hit your sense of smell is that extra-strong mint making it extensively used throughout the flavour and fragrance industry. It is also very popular in the personal care industry where many topical skin care products use Cornmint Oil for its cooling properties.
In its natural state, the oil exhibits a strong and fresh aroma, with a bittersweet nuance and a harsh, woody dry down with a green and herbaceous scent.

INCI name: Mentha arvensis Leaf/Stem Oil
Botanical name: Mentha arvensis
Menthol Crystals
Menthol is a naturally occurring compound within the Mentha arvensis plant through a process of biosynthesis. Also known as Cornmint, the plant is the dominant mint variety used to obtain Menthol Crystals which are also known as Menthol Flakes. They are derived by freezing the essential oil extracted from the corn mint leaves and can be removed by a filtering process. The clear crystals obtained present themselves as solid, translucent and colourless needles.
Menthol is a common ingredient used in oral hygiene products for its stimulating effect and cooling sensation. It acts on the skin receptors sensitive to cold. This creates the specific, powerful cooling and soothing sensation of the mints. In the case of Menthol Crystals, the strongly refreshing effect is increased due to their sharp, intense mint scent characteristic of the originating plant.

Eucalyptus Kochii Oil
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus kochii) Oil is approved by the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) as a valid alternative eucalyptus species to the more common ‘globulus’ eucalyptus. Our Eucalyptus Oil is produced in commercial quantities and offers the reliability of quality and quantity. Eucalyptus Globulus Oil
Australia is the homeland of the eucalyptus species. Eucalyptus globulus, an evergreen tree cousin to the myrtle tree, can grow to huge size that earned eucalyptus such renown : more than 60 meters high ! It was the first eucalyptus introduced in Europe, before wide spreading in the Mediterranean countries. Also called Blue Gum Tree, its bark shows bluish color while its leaves, silvery-blue when the tree is young, darken with age to cover a deep green. The fresh leaves and the leafy branches of the plant are distilled to obtain the essential oil, one of the first products exported from Australia.
Refreshing and very powerful, Eucalyptus Globulus Oil is nowadays used in aromatherapy as well as in traditional and natural medicine (inhalants and vapor rubs for example) or household. Its distinctive odor can be described as fresh, camphoraceous, crisp and clean, with woody, metallic or sometimes fruity scents and a characteristic note of eucalyptol (1,8-cineole).

INCI name: Eucalyptus globulus Leaf Oil

Eucalyptus Smithii Oil
It may not be the best known of the Eucalyptus family, but certainly one of the sweetest: Eucalyptus smithii Oil is very close to the Eucalyptus Radiata Oil. Commonly known as the gully gum, gully peppermint, blackbutt peppermint, or ironbark peppermint, Eucalyptus smithii is a species of medium-sized to tall tree, sometimes a mallee, that is endemic to south eastern Australia. It has rough compact bark on the trunk and smooth ribbony above, narrow lance-shaped adult leaves, white flowers and cup-shaped, bell-shaped, or hemispherical fruit.
Appreciated for its sweet and pleasant smell, Eucalyptus Smithii Oil imparts similar properties to those of Eucalyptus Radiata but its chemical composition is a little less diversified. Because it demonstrates the mildest scents of all the Eucalyptus oils, it is ideal for sensitive persons, like children and the elderly, and sometimes preferred to Eucalyptus Globulus. Very soft, fresh, with cineolic notes, it offers natural purifying benefits.

Fragonia Oil
Fragonia® is a relatively new essential oil originating from Western Australia and now grown in the Buhlambar farm. Australian essential oil pioneers John and Peta Day found the plant Agonis fragrans as having excellent potential as the basis for a new essential oil. They identified the variety with the most attractive aromatic properties, named it Fragonia and established its trademark. The oil is steam distilled from the terminal branches of the Agonis fragrans plant. This latter grows to an approximate height of 2.5 metres and displays flowering branches with fine, rigid leaves and small clusters of delicate white flowers, each having 5 petals and a pale pink centre. Commonly referred to as a sort of coarse tea tree, it has long been used in the cut flower industry, both for fresh and dried flowers.
Fragonia ® opens with crisp fresh menthol top notes with sweet Frangipani notes playing in the background. The menthol slowly transitions into sweet balsamic floral note leading to a sweet yet fresh aroma. It blends well with orange, jasmine, rose and ylang ylang oils. The pleasing aroma makes it an effective substitute for those wanting to avoid Tea Tree Oil.
